World War Z

Brad Pitt and zombies go together like peanut butter and jelly. But World War Z is much more than an action-packed treatise on the undead, according to director Marc Forster in an exclusive clip from the upcoming Blu-ray/DVD, out Sept. 17. (The movie will be available digitally beginning Tuesday.) "The film for me is not just a zombie movie. It's sort of a global epidemic, a global apocalypse," Forster says, adding that the title of the book it's based on, Max Brooks' World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, "mirrors this global spread." Pitt, who is also a credited producer on the movie, stars as Gerry Lane, a former United Nations employee who left his old job to live a more normal life with his wife (Mireille Enos) and family. He's brought back into action when a pandemic breaks out all over the world, and Gerry has to travel from South Korea to Jerusalem to Wales to figure out a cure before the Earth's entire population is zombified. Audiences don't have to wait long for all hell to break loose, either. When a cop whizzes by on his motorcycle and breaks the mirror off Gerry's family car, Forster says, "it's the first beat of tension and then really everything starts to derail." World War Z, which made $533 million worldwide this summer, is Pitt's most successful movie to date, and he and fellow producers are considering a sequel. In addition to a piece on Forster's collaboration with Pitt, other bonus features on the Blu-ray release include an exploration of the science behind the walking dead of World War Z and behind-the-scenes looks at several of the movie's set pieces, including the first zombie attack in Philadelphia and the signature sequence set in Jerusalem where thousands of zombies invade a seemingly fortified structure.
